Hidden Outdoor Stairways of Seattle

Blaine Stairway, Capitol Hill - 293 stairs

When you think of stairways in Seattle, you might immediately go to the more “famous” ones…Harbor Steps, Pike Place Market Hillclimb. With all the hills around Seattle, it’s inevitable that stairs were built, but with plant growth along the stairways, many of them remain hidden. Want to discover some? Check out these local websites.

Doug Beyerlein and others have cataloged and pin-pointed locations of over 100 outdoor stairways in Seattle at CommunityWalk.

Thistle Stairway, West Seattle - 367 stairs

Jake and Cathy Jaramillo are publishing a book (due out in the Fall of 2012). In the meantime, you can check out their Seattle Stairways blog, featuring photos and details of outdoor stairways by neighborhood.

What better time than fall to explore these stairways and enjoy the colors of the season.
